Te Tai Whanake Ki Tauranga Moana
Ngāti Ranginui are descendants of Tamateaarikinui, who anchored at Te Awaiti upon the Tākitimu waka. After conducting the appropriate rites and ceremonies, he and his descendants established themselves throughout what is now known as Tauranga Moana.
Ngāi Te Rangi is an iwi of the Mataatua waka whose founding ancestors are Te Rangihouhiri and Tamapahore. Ngāi Te Rangi established themselves in Tauranga Moana and currently has a population of approximately 20,000 descendants with thirteen marae and eleven hapū.
Ngāti Pūkenga iwi has 8 hapū and 6 nohoanga at: Ōwhakatoro, Matatā, Maketū, Tauranga, Manaia and Whangārei. We are descendants of those who arrived on the Mata-atua waka from Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa.
